Recruiting Address – Chichester Observer – Wednesday, 12 May 1915
Transcript:

SELSEY. A Boxing Match. A local pugilist named Harmsworth is to engage in an exhibition boxing match with Corporal Croucher the Cinema on Saturday next. A Recruiting Meeting. The Selsey Cinema was literally packed to overflowing on Saturday night when a meeting was held at the invitation of Mr, Archibald Hamilton, of Iping (Lieut. National Reserve and Hon. Recruiting Officer for Selsey and District). The building was indeed so full that many late arrivals could not get in. Mr. Scott, the eminent young artist, who, although his right hand is wounded, still continues to do brilliant work with his left, made an excellent maiden speech. He was one of the first batch of the London Scottish to go out to the front, and he thrilled his audience with the stories he had to tell, but with becoming modesty he refrained from saying anything about himself. Capital addresses were also given by Mr. Archibald Hamilton, who is still untiring in his efforts to obtain recruits, and in spite of heart trouble generally to be seen touring the district and keeping in touch with eligible young men on the land. Besides some really good cinema films the evening’s entertainment included a charming skirt dance Miss Scott, and songs by Mr. Baron, a Selsey favourite.
