Dirk Bogarde and Susan Stephen portray a newly-married couple who have to deal with a variety of problem, largely financial. Photographed in Eastmancolor, the film also stars Cecil Parker, Dennis Price, Eileen Herne and James Hayter. Anne Purves happily accepts when Tony Howard proposes to her in a cinema. They return to break the news to her parents. Mrs. Purves is surprised, but being a placid person, decides she likes young Tony and pledges her support when the news is broken to her husband. Mr. Purves returns home to find his daughter in the arms of a strange young man. He listens patiently to Tony when he asks permission to marry Anne. He asks the normal father-in-law questions and receives far from satisfactory replies. However, he tells Tony to see him again when he finds a fiat and a job.
