Lifeboat Presentation and Play – Chichester Observer – Wednesday, 08 May 1935
Transcript:

PRESENTATION AT SELSEY. The Greek Minister will to-day present, at Selsey, the Greek silver medal for nautical gallantry, which has been awarded to the motor lifeboat at Selsey and Bognor by his government, for the rescue of seven men of the crew of the steamer “Menelaos" in November, 1930. A gale was blowing with a very heavy sea. and the lifeboat put out shortly after ten at night in response to the steamer's S.O.S. She found the steamer, with her steering gear disabled and her hatches stove in, drifting rapidly towards the shore. Shortly after the lifeboat had rescued the seven men, the steamer went ashore, and became a total wreck. The presentation will be made at the Selsey Pavilion during a performance of “Tons of Money,” in aid of the Selsey branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
