Carnival Dance – Chichester Observer – Wednesday, 19 August 1936
Transcript:

SELSEY CARNIVAL A GREAT SUCCESS. Selsey’s first Carnival Queen, Miss Iris Fox, and her four maids of honour Miss Freda Mould, Miss Doris Henstridge, Miss Lina Langford and Miss Pamela Purchase, made a pretty quintet when they appeared in public for the first time since the coronation ceremony, on the occasion of Selsey’s Carnival procession, Wednesday. The Queen and her maids travelled in a van decorated in silver and bestrewn with flowers by the Women’s Section of the British Legion, and the long and colourful procession, which marched to the music played by the Chichester City Band, had at its head Sir Archibald Hamilton and his pipers in their gay Highland costume. At the conclusion of the procession the Queen and her maids left their "coach” for a throne in front of the Selsey Hotel, where Lady Felix Brunner, who distributed the Carnival awards, presented her own gifts of a trinket set to the Queen and perfumes to the maids of honour. A vote of thanks Lady Brunner was moved by Lieut.-Col. W. J. Moore, at whose call three hearty cheers were given by the large crowd of spectators and competitors. The merrymaking continued until the early hours of the morning with a dance at the Pavilion, the Casino Five dance band being in attendance and Mr. L. Clough acting as M.C. Selsey is to be congratulated upon the success which attended the effort and great credit is due to Mr. F. W. Owens, the organiser, and his hardworking Committee. (N.B. A very long list of prize winners for the carnival has been edited out.)
