The Treloar Dance-Chichester Observer-Wednesday 24 August 1927
Transcript:

The Treloar Dance. The seventh annual dance aid of the Treloar’s Cripples Home, was held on Friday. August 12th, in the Pavilion, Selsey, and as usual proved an immense success, every inch of the floor space being utilised. An excellent orchestra of six had been engaged by Mr. Phipps (the proprietor the Pavilion) from Portsmouth and turned out trumps. This event which is organised by the Hon. Secretary of the Selsey Cot, Mrs. Harford, always an outstanding success and not only serves an excellent charitable purpose but forms a happy occasion for the re-union of past and present members of Selsey’s little community. The refreshments, for which this dance is justly famous, were all given gratis, and were of the most tempting quality. The fancy dress costumes, although not quite so numerous this year (probably owing to the absence of the "Festival Day”), were nevertheless of a delightful and varied quality, the winners were 1, Mis Gwen Ewen and 2, Mrs. Carrington. Girls:1. Miss Kitty Clark-Kennedy; 2, Betty Sandilands. Gentlemen: 1, Mr Ronald Rose: 2. Mr. Tony Hogge. A special prize of a basket of fruit was awarded to Miss Sadie Thomson who appeared in a delightful representation of Alice in Wonderland. The prizes for the fancy dress were awarded by Mr. George Belcher (the famous Punch cartoonist ). The decorations of the Hall (Gladioli) were the gift of Mrs. Robinson, of Eastergate. Messrs. Webster, Hooper, and Baker also contributed to this floral scheme. The magnificent sum of approximately £75 was raised. There is little doubt that the secret of the success of the Treloar dances, is the excellent spirit of co-operation, from which the petty jealousies we so often see these affairs were conspicuous by their absence. This, coupled with the services of a capable and energetic Hon. Secretary, ensures its success.
